Coos Bay Area Day 2
May 17, 2019
Today was a one lighthouse and more beaches day. The lighthouse was Heceta Head Lighthouse. This lighthouse sits on the west side of 1,000-foot-high Heceta Head. It has a 56-foot tower. It was first illuminated in 1894. It is an active lighthouse and the beam reaches 21 miles out to sea and is the strongest lighthouse on the Oregon coast. The lighthouse is open to the public year-round but is a steep climb from the parking lot. I spent more time stopping at spots along the beaches and more pictures of the rocks and seascapes. The lighthouse is 60 miles north of Coos Bay, so it was 120 miles of beach patrol. There are several beaches and bays in that 60 miles. There is also an interesting stop called Sea Lion Cave. It is a cave that sea lions live in and is open to the ocean. They are not in a captive situation like a zoo or Sea World. The cave is dark and flash photography is not permitted. I originally set my ISO setting to 5000 and my shutter speed to 1/160sec, but that wasn’t enough, so I raised the ISO to 6400 and the shutter speed to 1/125sec and that was better. I got several of the sea lions in the cave and from outside looking down at the rocks.
