Hard Hike And Photography – Yosemite NP
April 16, 2019
I found out something today. My age, hiking and high altitude do not mix well. I was in Mariposa Grove to get pictures of the Sequoia tree called the Grizzly Giant. I rode the shuttle up to the stop and when I got off the bus, I was already a mile above sea level. There was a sign that stated that the Grizzly Giant was .8 mile up the path. I started walking and it was a pretty smooth path, but it was all uphill. I made it to .3 mile from the tree and I started to feel lighted headed. I waited a little bit and decided to start back down, and I was still dizzy. I then stumbled and fell. I ended up sitting on a bench and waiting for a ride that was offered by one of the park volunteers. By the time that I got back to my car I was doing fine, but I learned not to do that anymore. I did find out that because I have a handicap card in my card, I can drive up to the tree starting on Wednesday. I plan on going back up since I don’t have to walk. I did get a few images on my way up. Once I got to my car I just drove around the valley and stopping to get images at different places along the road. It was a cloudy rainy day, so the light was challenging. One of the things that I do is use a three-frame bracket procedure when I am taking landscape pictures. I set my shutter speed and the starting f-stop, and the camera will take one frame at my first f-stop and the one f-stop up and one f-stop down. I then go through my pictures and select which of the three pictures I should start with when I do my processing in Adobe Lightroom. Unfortunately, today is set my starting f-stop to low so two of the images had the same f-stop and therefore had the same amount of light. I was able to deal with it, but I am sure that there were probably some images that I had to do more processing than normal.
