Welcome to Olympic NP and Peninsula
June 2, 2019
I have made it to the Olympic Peninsula and Olympic National Park. I ended up taking the ferry from Seattle. It wasn’t my choice; it was Garmin’s choice. I thought that I was going to go back down south and get on US-101 and then come up the peninsula but didn’t realize where I was until it was too late. But I dealt with it. There is so much to see here, both in the park and outside of the park. My first day I have just driven around outside of the park trying to get my bearings. I went along the coast for a little bit. I went to the Salt Creek Recreational Area and then to Dungeness County Park in Sequim (pronounced swim) and walked down a long path to the beach. Once I got down to the beach there was a steep cliff where Pigeon Guillemot’s are currently nesting on the cliff. It was tough getting pictures of them especially while they were a rest on the cliff. My 28-300mm couldn’t get me close enough to fill the screen and I was having a hard time focusing on them. They are very active and fast birds. I did get a few pictures of them in flight but had to do a lot of cropping in post processing in Lightroom. It was also hard because the sky gave me a white-grey background while they were in flight. They are OK but no award winners. Most of them were shot with an ISO 100, shutter speed 1/250 and f-stop of f/7.1. Me and Mother Nature are going to have to have another talk because she isn’t listening to me. Hopefully it will get better over the next two weeks.
