Olympic National Park Ruby Beach
June 25, 2019
On this day I drove out to the west side of the Olympic Peninsula. I went to Ruby Beach which is in the Olympic National Park. It looked a lot like the Oregon coast except the beach is covered with very large driftwood tree trunks. When I read one of the signs, the logs come to the beach from all over. Some are from right along the coast where storms and erosion cause the trees to fall into the ocean and eventually end up on the beach. Another way is that the same thing happens along rivers in the northwest and eventually the trees float down the river and into the ocean where they make their way to the beach. In order to get to the beach, I had to walk and crawl over the driftwood. The driftwood and the rocks jutting out of the ocean were very interesting. As I said, the rocks reminded me of the Oregon coast. Unfortunately, I was there just after hightide so there weren’t any tidepools for me to look at, but there was a lot of other things to take pictures of. Even some of the rocks that I was able to walk up to some of the rocks and they had some very interesting designs in them. One had one design that I thought was organic and looked like honeycombs. I touched it very gently and found out that it was the rock. I guess the water and wind had ground out the little holes in the rock over course of years. Just about every image that I captured was shot at ISO 320, shutter speed of 1/500 sec and the f-stop was f/5.6.
